BAAM Bike Rack Design Contest

Building African American Minds is seeking Design Proposals for functional artistic bike racks that will accommodate 6 to 8 bicycles. This competition is open to artists and design professionals, as well as community members with an eye for fun and functionality. Everyone is encouraged to participate. All complete submissions will be considered. A Selection Committee representing BAAM students, parents, and neighbors will choose ONE WINNING DESIGN to be located at the BAAM Athletic Center on Jowite Street in Easton. - Design must be unique. Designs representing Easton’s history and culture are encouraged. - Rack must accommodate a minimum of three bicycles properly secured to the frame Applicant must submit a graphic representation and description of project, including proposed materials and dimensions. Timeline: Application Opens: August 27, 2024 Submission Deadline: November 1, 2024 Committee Deliberation: January 2025 Announcement of Selection: February 6, 2025 Dates are subject to change at the discretion of the Selection Committee. *The Committee reserves the right to reject or accept all submissions at their discretion. Application, Procedure, and Program Guidelines - The Applicant will be credited with the design, however, ownership of the finished piece will be turned over to BAAM. - The rack will be installed at no cost to the applicant. - Final design selection will be at the discretion of the Selection Committee Rack Guidelines and Specifications - Bike rack designs should blend with area architecture and features of the BAAM buildings. - Racks must support bicycle upright in its frame in two places. - Must enable the frame and one wheel of the bicycle to be secured with a standard U-lock. Each Entry Must Include the Following - A pdf file of the design proposal in 8.5”x11” format. - A graphic representation of the proposed format and installation is required. Acceptable forms might include computer-generated simulations, line drawings, color renderings, or other means of graphic representation of the proposed installation that adequately conveys the nature of the artist’s proposal. - A Proposal Narrative (maximum of 3000 characters, about 500 words) accompanying the graphic representation that includes: - A description of how the design represents Easton’s history and/or culture, if applicable. - A brief biography (maximum of 1500 characters, about 250 words) that describes your interest in this project. - Name, Address, Phone Number, Email Address, and Social Media included on all submitted documents. Upon announcement of the winning design, the selection committee will award a $1,500 prize to the selected design and $300 to each of the four runners-up. Wardell Brice, Sr. Memorial Basketball Classic

The Wardell Brice, Sr. Basketball Classic is an annual charity basketball game supporting BAAM's Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to two Black male students—one from Talbot County and one from Caroline County. Now in its third year, the event will take place on November 2, 2024, at Easton High School in Easton, Maryland. The game offers a fun and engaging way for the community to come together in support of an amazing cause while enjoying some great basketball! Tickets are $10, with free entry for children 12 and under. Individual tickets to the event are only available at the door.

BAAM Public Art Project - Call for Teaching Artist

Building African American Minds (BAAM) is looking for a Teaching Artist to facilitate art classes for after school students in grades 1-5. Starting September 2024, the Teaching Artist will work with students over a course of 6 to 8 weeks where they will design artistic outdoor benches. The students’ designs will be considered for the final design that will appear on proposed benches to be located outside of the BAAM Athletic Center. Artists across all visual and performing arts mediums are welcome! This project is supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council. Preferred Qualifications: - 2-3 yearsʼ experience as an active, practicing artist (Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Fine Arts, or similar credentials appreciated) - Experience teaching school aged children - Experience working within school programs - Culturally competent and responsible teaching practice - Must pass background check Teaching Artist Requested Skills: - Design and implement a well-planned lesson - Experience teaching art workshops - Strong communication skills Terms of Employment: Teaching Artist is hired as an independent contractor and will be paid a stipend of $3,000. Money Maryland

Join Talbot County small business leaders for the free Money Maryland Expo on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the BAAM Athletic Center at 31 Jowite Street in Easton, Maryland. Participation is limited, with advanced registration required at www.moneymaryland.com. The Money Maryland program connects Maryland residents to important local and state resources. The event includes free learning sessions, interactive panel discussions, and connections to free business resources, workforce training, loans, grants, and support for small businesses. Featured topics include marketing and branding for small businesses; business basics for entrepreneurs; profitably pricing products, services, and contracts; and funding options for startups and growing companies. The event will also feature a business resource fair and networking opportunities. Free parking and refreshments are available for Money Maryland attendees. Lunch will also be provided. The Money Maryland (TM) series was developed by Will Holmes Consulting (WHC) and is produced in partnership with the Talbot County Economic Development and Tourism.
